Prisoner reports jail after waiting for loo roll

A man being held in custody in Gothenburg, in western Sweden, has reported the detention centre to authorities after it took two hours for toilet paper to be delivered to his cell.

The detainee was so unsatisfied with the service that he made an official report to the Parliamentary Ombudsman (Justitieombudsmannen).

“This is the first time I have heard of something like this. The criticism is legitimate,” said Christer Krohn, the corrections manager of the detention centre, to the Nyheter24 news site.

The detainee was being held in Gothenburg, western Sweden, and had complained of stomach problems, according to the paper, yet it was still hours before the night staff arrived with the paper.

The inmate also complained that a book he had ordered took over a month to arrive, and writing paper with envelopes took several days to be delivered.

The Parliamentary Ombudsman said the incident was ‘unacceptable’.

According to Krohn, the matter will be taken seriously and handled quickly. He stated to the paper that the centre will take up such issues in future meetings, and will emphasize the importance of following procedures.

At the time of the man’s custody, in April, the prison was newly opened.
