The silent film won awards in seven categories, including best director for Michel Hazanavicius, best actor for Jean Dujardin and best film.
“I’m very surprised because so many people thought there was no script because there was no dialogue, so English people are very clever. Congratulations to you,” said the film’s director as he accepted his award.
The film also won for Original Music, Cinematography and Costume Design.
The only disappointment for the film was its leading lady, Bérénice Bejo, failing to win the best actress award, which went to Meryl Streep for her betrayal of Margaret Thatcher in the film The Iron Lady.
In his category, Jean Dujardin beat Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Gary Oldman and Michael Fassbender.
The awards will increase anticipation that The Artist is set to win big at the Academy Awards, which will be held in Los Angeles on February 26th.
