“We are searching the area by air to ascertain that there is no oil spillage and so far we haven’t seen anything,” said local police officer Kalle Isaksson to news agency TT.
The 82-metre cargo ship Anke Angela, carrying Gilbraltar flags and with a crew of six, ran aground about 70 kilometres north of the Öland Bridge around 2am on Wednesday.
The Swedish coast guard suspect that the two senior officers onboard the ship were drunk at the time of the accident and they have been taken ashore for testing, according to Kalmar police.
It is believed that the ship has been unloading timber in Mönsterås but it is still unknown what cargo it was carrying at the time of the accident.
“We are going to carry out a survey of the seabed with divers over the course of the morning to see if the ship has been damaged,” Isaksson said to TT.
Despite continuing to check the area by air the coast guards aren’t able to survey the full extent of the accident until daylight breaks. Then they can decide whether they will be able to pull the ship off the ground
