Tears as Neuchatel Xamax sack four players

Beleaguered Swiss football club Neuchatel Xamax announced on Wednesday that they have sacked four players, including captain Stephane Besle, with immediate effect.

The other sacked players were Javier Arizmendie, Vincent Bikana and Haris Seferovic, according to Swiss media reports.

The move came the day after the Swiss Football League (SFL) deducted a further four points from Xamax for breaches of licensing rules, while the club’s players are still awaiting their salaries for November and December.

Besle, 28, was sacked after a meeting in the office of vice-president Islam Satujev, which he left in tears.

The Frenchman had played almost 200 league matches since joining Xamax from Lens in 2005 and was made club captain last summer.

Team spokesperson Raoul Savoy said that the three other players had been let go for sporting reasons.

Xamax have had several run-ins with the Swiss authorities since Chechen businessman Bulat Chagaev bought the club in May for an estimated 1.2 million Swiss francs ($1.3m).

On December 14th, the SFL docked Xamax four points for failing to provide financial details pertinent to the awarding of operating licences.

Xamax have four days to appeal against the punishment handed down on Tuesday.

On November 2nd, the SFL imposed a fine of 20,000 Swiss francs for failing to provide “information and financial documents” following Chagaev’s takeover.

Swiss prosecutors charged the businessman with forgery on November 24th, amid media reports he allegedly submitted a falsified bank document to prove his solvency during a bankruptcy trial.

VIDEO: Spain’s La Liga reviews video of boy racially abusing Vinicius

Spain's La Liga on Monday said it was reviewing a video of a child making racist insults towards Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior during the 2-2 draw with Valencia at the weekend.

“We’re in the process of studying and analysing the facts from a legal standpoint to see what we can and should do,” La Liga sources said.

In a video published by a journalist for ESPN Brasil, and picked up by Spanish media, a boy sitting in a woman’s lap can be heard calling Vinicius a “monkey”.

The Brazilian scored twice for Madrid as his team recovered from two goals down at Mestalla on Saturday.

Vinicius raised his fist in a “Black Power” salute after the first of his two goals at a ground where he was racially abused last season. Valencia subsequently banned three people from the stadium for life.

The 23-year-old has become a symbol of the fight against discrimination in Spanish football after suffering racist abuse on many occasions, and he was jeered repeatedly by home supporters on Saturday.

Jude Bellingham was sent off after the final whistle against Valencia for protesting after the referee blew the final whistle right before the England midfielder headed home what he thought was the winning goal.
