The newest zoo resident is a female black rhinoceros baby, born in the early hours of Christmas Eve to the delight of keepers in charge of her 30-year-old mother Mana.
“There are already many suggestions,” said zoo spokeswoman Regina Jembere on Thursday.

The tradition is to give all black rhinos at the zoo names beginning with “Ma”, but apart from that and a desire for an African name, all bets are open. Makini for example is Swahili for quiet and balanced. Zoo authorities say they will wait a while to see how the baby behaves before settling on a name.
The baby and her mother will be kept away from the public for a while to enable them to establish a close relationship in private. But working with Stern.tv, the zoo has set up a camera with a live feed set up in their enclosure.
