According to police, the 36-year-old man entered a branch of the Sparkasse in Berlin’s Moabit district on Wednesday, walked up to the counter, uttered the time-honoured phrase “this is a holdup,” and asked for exactly three euros.
The bemused cashier handed over the cash, but the man was then caught on the street outside by one of the bank’s security guards. The 58-year-old guard held him there until police arrived shortly afterwards.
The police said they found a “piece of scrap wood” on the suspect, but that he did not threaten anyone with it.
Despite the modesty of his demands, the man was handed over to state authorities and is now being charged with armed robbery. No-one was injured in the incident.
Police did not confirm speculation that the man was drunk, though they did say they took a blood and urine test from him.
