Reinfeldt lauds ‘proper laundry room’ in renovated palace home

Prime minister Fredrik Reinfeldt's official residence, Sagerska Huset in Stockholm, which he was forced to leave due to extensive renovations in April, is now ready for the family to move back.

The project, which was budgeted at 15 million kronor ($2.49 million), has stayed within budget and on schedule.

”I am very happy with that and with the fact that I now have a proper laundry room with a proper washing machine,” Reinfeldt told news agency TT on Wednesday.

Reinfeldt, who is known to take pleasure in taking care of the family laundry, has reportedly long desired a private laundry room to be installed in the apartment.

Reinfeldt explained during a press conference in April that the ventilation system in the residence was so poor that the fire brigade had been called out when he fixed himself a snack.

“It has, unfortunately, led to the fire department being called out when I made myself some toast,” Reinfeldt said at a press conference at the time.

He explained that the residence, which was built in 1884, is not adapted for a family with children.

Prior to the renovation, some of the windows couldn’t be opened at all and during the winter the temperature in one of the children’s room fell below 15 degrees Celsius, causing the family to resort to bringing in portable heaters.

However, the renovation is hoped to have taken care of the more serious hazard of the old building, which caused the prime minister getting stuck between floors in the elevator on a number of occasions.

“That is a frightening experience in itself but it has also had as a consequence that we have been late for flights abroad,” Reinfeldt said at the time of the move.

New features in the house are reportedly a wine cooler, new white wares and a jacuzzi. However, Reinfeldt told newspaper Metro that despite the new additions to the house, it is the washing machine he is the happiest about.

“I really enjoy doing the laundry and it isn’t until now it will be possible. I think that’s great.,” Reinfeldt said to the paper.

The family are expected to be back in the renovated residence in January.
