Matthias D. was arrested at his home in Saxony early Sunday morning. Federal police also searched three flats in the region, including Matthias D.’s and that of another suspected helper of the National Socialist Underground (NSU), the terrorist cell responsible for the murders of at least 10 people between 2000 and 2007.
State prosecutors believe Matthias D. helped the Zwickau trio – Uwe Böhnhardt, Uwe Mundlos and Beate Zschäpe – on at least two separate occasions.
He reportedly provided them with two flats in Zwickau, in the state of Saxony, signing a sub-let contract with Uwe Böhnhardt, who used an alias, in June 2003.
This helped the Zwickau trio to live underground and prepare terrorist attacks.
The state prosecutors are also accusing the suspect of sharing the NSU’s aims and beliefs. An arrest warrant had been issued for him on December 8.
According to a report in Der Spiegel, the police now have seven suspects connected with the NSU. The group was dramatically brought to light in early November, when Böhnhardt and Mundlos were found dead in a camper-van and their Zwickau flat was destroyed by an explosion.
Zschäpe turned herself in a few days later.
