New winter storm heading towards Sweden

Those who plan to celebrate Lucia day on Tuesday will have to hold on tight to garb and glitter, as a new storm is headed to Sweden in the beginning of next week.

New winter storm heading towards Sweden

Rough winds and about 10-15 centimetres of snow are about to follow the storms that have already flooded large areas along the west coast. Thousands of households are without power as the new low-pressure is emerging.

“The storms are relieving each other. It’ll be windy along with the snowfall that’s headed to the west coast and the western parts of the Svealand region. Steady winds will blow inland, and along the coasts the winds will be rougher,” said Lisa Frost at the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute, SMHI.

The southern parts of the country will get temperatures a few degrees above freezing, which might lead to rain, while Svealand and the northern parts of the country will get snow.

Southern Sweden is still enjoying relatively mild weather, but temperatures in the northern parts will fall to about minus 20 degrees Celsius in the next few days.

“Winter has reached large parts of northern Sweden but along the coasts it’s still autumn. Winter has also come to northern Värmland and the Dalarna region, but Svealand and Götaland still enjoy autumn weather,” Frost said.

For the forecasters to consider temperatures to indicate winter, the average temperature must fall below zero degrees Celsius for at least five consecutive days.
