One in ten Germans grind their teeth – a phenomenon largely associated with stress – and the number of people affected seems to be increasing, according to the country’s dentists.

The Dentists’ Association said its figures showed that people aged between 35 and 45 are most likely to grind their teeth – usually as they sleep. This is the age when careers become more stressful and are often combined with family concerns.

And women are more likely to grind their teeth than men, the association’s annual report on Germany’s mouths shows. Between eight and 15 percent of women grind their teeth, while for men the share is three to 10 percent.

Of the 1,600 dentists questioned for the report, 80 percent said they were seeing an increase of teeth grinding among their patients, the Frankfurter Rundschau reported on Wednesday.

Teeth grinding can not only damage teeth and leave jaw muscles aching in the morning – not to mention waking other people up – if chronic and severe, it can also damage the jaw musculature and in some cases also even cause tinnitus.
