Man charged with child rape after chlamydia test

A man has been charged with raping a child after he submitted to a test for chlamydia and one of his declared sex partners turned out to be a minor, according to a report in the Malmö City daily.

The Swedish infectious diseases law requires all those carrying a sexually transmitted disease to draw up a list of sex partners so that the authorities can get in contact and advised them to also take a test.

So as a matter of course the 27-year-old Malmö man drew up a list of at his sexual partners and handed it over to the health authorities.

But as one of the names on his list is a girl who was aged 13 at the time, below the age of a consent, he now faces up to three years imprisonment for raping a child.

Both the man and the girl have stated in police interviews that the sex between them was consensual and that they had sexual relations on around ten separate occasions, the newspaper reported.

The pair also told how they came into contact via the Bilddagboken internet community.

The man has claimed that he thought the girl was much older than she in fact was, although the girl has stated that he knew that she was only 13-years-old, and thus two years below the age of consent.

According to Swedish law the crime of raping a child carries a minimum two years imprisonment, but as this case concerns repeated offences and the age difference is so great, then the prosecutor plans to seek a penalty of three years imprisonment.
