Sweden braces for freezing rain, snow

Freezing rain and snow is expected to fall across large swaths of central and northern Sweden on Friday night, prompting warnings from icy road conditions across much of the region.

So far, Swedes have largely been spared from winter weather this season, but the unusually balmy autumn is set to give way to frosty conditions in much of the country at the weekend.

On Friday, Sweden’s meteorological agency SMHI issued a class 1 warning from Värmland in west central Sweden all the way up to Jämtland and Västerbotten counties in the north.

In addition, the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) also warned motorists about slippery roads due to frost in parts of northern Sweden.

“Snow is on the way in Jämtland, Härjedalen and Dalarna [counties] during the afternoon and temperatures are going to be around freezing,” meteorologist Martin Hedberg with Klart.se told the Svenska Dagbladet (SvD) newspaper on Friday.

The mix of freezing rain and wet snow will likely make more treacherous road conditions in much of the country.

“Of course it’s going to be slippery,” said Hedberg.

While temperatures are expected to hover just below freezing in central Sweden, residents in the country’s far north can expect to see the mercury dip as low as 15 degrees below zero.

Around Stockholm, forecasts call for scattered rain showers with temperatures remaining just above the freezing mark.

According to Hedberg, a high pressure system will likely result in mostly cloudy skies in many parts of the country.

“Unfortunately, we’re not going to see the sun much this weekend,” he told SvD.

Despite the weekend’s dropping temperatures, Hedberg added that temperatures remain above normal for this time of year.
