17-year-old arrested after ‘Halloween spoof’

A teenager was apprehended Friday evening in northern Sweden on suspicion of attempted murder after a shot was fired into a house. The alleged targets thought it was a Halloween spoof.

No one was injured.

The targeted victims, an elderly couple from Svärtbjörsbyn, thought it was a Halloween prank.

A masked man allegedly banged on the couple’s door at 2am Friday morning, claiming to be from the postal service.

“I thought it was a Halloween joke,” the man told local television news station, TV4 Luleå.

The masked man held a rifle, which the elderly man pushed against, shoving the intruder out of the house and shutting the door.

Shortly afterwards, a gunshot was fired and a bullet entered the house. No one was hurt.

Early Friday afternoon, police brought in a 17-year-old from the nearby town of Boden for interrogation.

A “combination of tips and intelligence” led police to the young suspect, Anna-Lena Hesse, public relations officer from Norrbotten’s police department, told TT news agency.

”We do not know exactly what the connections are, but this is a small municipality and a small residential area,” said Hesse.

As of late Friday evening, police still did not provide further comment related to the whereabouts of the alleged weapon.

“They have done a search, and a seizure was made. There will certainly be more information tomorrow,” Erik Kummu, the county administrative officer with Norrbotten’s police, told the TT.

Following the interrogation, the local prosecutor decided to have the 17-year-old arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
