The injections use hyaluronic acid and promise to increase the cup size of a woman’s breasts on a semi-permanent basis without the need for surgery.
The decision to ban the jabs was taken by the body charged with making sure health and medical products are safe, Afssaps (l’Agence française de securité sanitaire des produits de santé).
In a statement, Afssaps said the ban was motivated by a 2008 study that found the injections could have an impact on medical images and interfere with breast palpation, both of which are necessary when checking for breast cancer.
Despite ordering the ban, the agency stressed “there is no evidence of any serious incident in the last three years of use in France or in Europe.”
Afssaps believes around 2,500 women in France have had the breast-enhancing injections.
