The man left the court building with two other prisoners and three police officers.
Two of the three prisoners were handcuffed, but the prison medical department had prescribed the Algerian man with crutches due to an ankle complaint.
After the court hearing, however, the man cast aside his walking aids and absconded. The police immediately took chase and enlisted the help of search dogs, but the pacy prisoner managed to disappear without a trace.
“We still have not found him and are still looking for him,” a police spokeswoman told The Local on Wednesday afternoon.
The 25-year old, who has been serving time at Bois Mermet prison in Lausanne, is not thought to be dangerous. He was appearing before the court for attempted theft, trespassing and breach of drug laws.
