The two, aged 20 and 22, masked the registration plates of the cars and filmed their exploits. They had planned to post the results on the internet.
Other motorists alerted police who chased and arrested the speeding men. The film they had been making provided enough evidence to show a series of driving offences. At some points they came close to reaching speeds of 200 km/h.
In court they claimed unsuccessfully to have been making a serious film, but said they panicked when they saw the police.
As well as being banned from driving for a year, the two were given six month suspended prison sentences and each fined €1,000.
Public prosecutor Claude Palpacuer told AFP that their behaviour was part of a “developing trend, that of filming ‘exploits’ to then boast about them on the internet.”
