28-year old Anne Caudal, who was four months pregnant, went missing from the village of Bruz, just south of the north-west town of Rennes, on July 8th. Her body was found in Nouvoitou, 15 kilometres from Rennes, in an isolated spot.
The young woman’s boyfriend and his ex-wife have both been in custody since Tuesday. Radio station RTL reported late on Wednesday that he had confessed to the murder. The prosecutor was quoted in newspaper Le Figaro only as saying the suspects had “started to recognize their involvement.”
Both are expected to appear in court on Thursday where the boyfriend will be charged with murder and his ex-wife with destroying evidence.
Reports by RTL say that the dead woman’s boyfriend confessed to strangling her after an argument. He then hid the body, allegedly helped by his ex-wife, and set fire to it.
Anne Caudal’s father told AFP he was “stunned” by the developments. “Last week he was in tears and was helping us look for her,” he said. “We were a long way from imagining this scenario. He should get the maximum he deserves so he can’t do something as bad to anyone else.”
