According to local weather services, snow was recorded in the Glarus Alps in central Switzerland at an altitude of 1,900 metres.
Webcams scattered in the mountains showed blankets of white snow, while tourists wrapped up warm and played with snowballs. The cold snap marks a premature return winter after the early onset of summery conditions this April.
“Above 2,300 meters, it has snowed from five to 15 centimetres in the past 24 hours,” Jacques Ambühl from Meteo News was quoted as saying by 20 Minuten newspaper.
Temperatures above 2,300 metres reached a maximum of 6 degrees Celsius. The unseasonably cold weather has also hit Swiss cities, where heavy rain has dampened summer spirits.
Weather forecasts say the situation is expected to remain unchanged over the next few days.
