Swiss flight cancelled after pilot reports sick

A Swiss flight connecting Zurich to Sao Paulo was canceled on Saturday because of a short-notice sick pilot. Holidays and new routes mean the airline's staff are thinly spread.

The flight, with 218 passengers, was grounded after the company did not manage to organize a replacement due to staff shortages, said the popular 20 Minuten daily.

Passengers were given a meal voucher and were encouraged to say at private homes because not enough hotel rooms could be arranged, it said.

The paper added that Swiss confirmed the incident, saying that current staffing levels are thin, despite a great number of applications.

“Due to the high amount of accumulated holidays, we are trying to give pilots as many days off as possible,” spokeswoman Susanne Mühlemann was quoted as saying.

An additional challenge is also represented by new routes on offer, the paper said.
