Midsummer came and went amid the usual flurry of accidents and drunkenness, but with few serious incidents for police to deal with around the country.

Relatively calm midsummer celebrations in Sweden

Midsummer’s eve is normally one of the busiest of the year for the emergency services, but celebrations passed off for the main part relatively peacefully, according to reports by news agency TT.

The police force around Stockholm was one of the busiest with the worst cases of violence and drunkenness taking place in the archipelago.

Police had to escort several of the worst troublemakers from the various islands into the city.

Further southwest, the forces in Gothenburg said that the main trouble spots were found around the city itself, and there were a few serious incidents reported at around 3am.

In Skåne, in the south, police arrested 12 people for various misdemeanours, while another 23 were taken into custody on drunk and disorderly charges.

Officer Helena Ralmark, working the Midsummer shift for the first time, said “We have been busy all the time”.

The same night last year brought 40 arrests and 34 people with were treated for various injuries.

Meanwhile in Dalarna, police were required to deal with several incidents, the worst of which were around Leksand, where 10 people were taken into custody on charges of drunken behaviour.

The most serious incident was a car crash involving four people between the ages of 22 and 29 years old in Malung.

The two most seriously injured were taken to hospital in Falun. A 54-year-old man was also treated, following a motorcycle accident.

On the islands it was also a busy night for the emergency services. Some problems occurred on the baltic island of Öland, while Gotland Police reported a relatively quiet midsummer, with the worst over by 3am.

Again drunkenness was the main problem, with a couple of arrests for assault and the use of threatening behaviour.
