Aquarium seeks heir to Paul the psychic octopus

The Sea Life aquarium chain is looking for the next incarnation of Paul, the octopus who amazed the world by correctly predicting the results of Germany’s matches in the 2010 World Cup.

To celebrate this year’s Women’s World Cup, each of the country’s eight Sea Life aquariums will have one of its octopuses to predict the competition’s results by picking a mussel to eat from one of two containers with the competing countries’ flags, just as Paul did.

The cephalopod with the most correct predictions will be officially deemed Paul’s successor.

The predictions will be released on each match day at 11 am and will include octopuses across the country from Berlin to Oberhausen – Paul’s former home.

Paul became famous in 2010 after he correctly predicted the results in all seven of Germany’s matches as well as the World Cup final.

He subsequently became a featured attraction at the Oberhausen Sea Life aquarium, attracting thousands of visitors before he died in late 2010. Paul was given a small burial plot at the aquarium and a shrine was erected in his honour.
