The 28-year-old man, currently in detention in Bayreuth, Germany, is required to pay 448,600 francs ( $528,000) in customs fees for the car, said a report in the Corriere del Ticino newspaper.
Last May, together with two accomplices, the man stole a Bugatti and two other luxury cars in the Canton of Zurich, worth a total of 1.5 million francs ($1.7 million). The ensuing police chase ended in Germany, where the Polish man and one accomplice were arrested, while the third car was found abandoned and the last suspect is still on the run.
According to German customs authorities, the Polish thief is now also guilty of smuggling, as the Bugatti, worth over 1.2 million francs ($1.4 million), was not registered in the EU. The bill includes the VAT of 19 percent of the car’s total value and customs duties of 10 percent, the paper said.
