According to police reports the two officers were on duty near the Kottbusser Tor metro station on Sunday when they were suddenly hit by pepper spray and were struck in their faces.
The officers suffered eye irritation and bruises, officials said, who added the investigation was being handled “with priority.” Another six police officers in the area fell temporarily ill from the tear gas.
May Day clashes between left-wing extremist and police have become a tradition in Berlin. This year, about 100 police officers suffered slight injuries and 161 rioters were arrested. Last year, nearly 500 people were arrested.
