Winter chill brings snowfall to Sweden

Wintry conditions have made a return to much of Sweden with snow showers reported in central and northern areas.

The snow is forecast to turn to rain later today, according to Sweden’s Meteorological Institute (SMHI).

“The colder weather will dominate until the middle of the week in line with the northerly winds,” said SMHI meteorologist Emelie Hermansson in a statement.

Snowfalls are forecast for parts of Sweden on Wednesday, primarily in the eastern parts of Götaland.

The return of a cold snap prompted a response from Sweden’s foreign minister Carl Bildt.

“Why on Earth is it snowing in Stockholm now? Any way to stop this?” he joked in his Twitter feed on Tuesday morning.

According to current forecasts, Carl Bildt and the Swedish public, won’t have to wait long before their prayers are answered with temperatures expected to resume their climb towards the end of the week and stabilise towards the weekend.

Southern Sweden will enjoy temperatures of up to 15 degrees Celsius on Thursday with rains and changeable weather forecast for Norrland.

The weekend should bring with it 20 degrees Celsius temperatures in southern areas with stable spring weather in much of central Sweden.

After a burst of summer weather in the beginning of April, temperatures have in fact returned to something approaching normal for this time of the year.

“We have got the April weather now,” said Anna Hagenblad at SMHI.
