Tax breaks for home help and nannies planned for middle class

Family Minister Kristina Schröder says she is working on plans for tax breaks for those who employ home help or nannies in an effort to make it easier for middle class families.

“Help in the household or with childcare should be better supported, and not just for those who earn more,” she told the Welt am Sonntag newspaper.

The pensioner who gets in help to care for a disabled spouse should be able to do so more easily, she said.

“It is about help in the family, which is much more extensive than the mini-job solution,” she said.

“At the moment, only the absolute upper classes can afford such help.”

This must be made possible for a much broader swathe of society, she said. Many mothers in mid-ranking jobs need help at home in order to even make a career possible.

Schröder said she was taking France as an example, where she said it was normal for middle class families to have help. That was one reason why the French birth rate was high, she said.

“We must recognise that the family is a workplace too,” she said.
