Hundreds march against nuclear power

Thousands of demonstrators marched in Bern and Basel to demand the shut down of one of Switzerland’s oldest plant, while about 2,000 people gathered on a bridge at the crossroads of France, Germany and Switzerland.

More people demonstrated along the Rhine river, said the Swiss daily Corriere del Ticino. A hike to support renewable energy was staged in the Bernese Jura region, including visits to the Mont Soleil solar power station and the wind station on Mont Crosin, reports say.

There are four nuclear power plants with five reactors in operation, most of them located in north and central Switzerland.  

The newspaper also said that a group of members of the Swiss parliament has traveled to Ukraine as part of the celebrations marking the 25^th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. The politicians attended a memorial service for the victims of the catastrophe and are schedule to visit an off-limit area of the nuclear plant, the newspaper said.
