Live webcam the first to show intimate scenes of eagle family life

The German Wild Animal Foundation has set up the first ever live camera to record the family life of a lesser spotted eagle, with sound and pictures available around the clock on the internet.

Bird lovers and office workers trapped inside who want a taste of the woods who log onto the website find themselves 15 metres up in a tree in a Latvian nature reserve, staring at a nest-shaped collection of twigs.

If the hypnotic twitter of the woodland birds and the slight swaying of branches in the wind is enough to keep viewers watching, they will be rewarded sooner or later with the arrival of the female eagle who is still tricking out the nest.

The foundation spokeswoman said although the nest was in the Latvian nature reserve of Teici, further information on its location would not be released in order to protect it.

The birds have only recently returned to the region after spending the winter in South Africa.

The Wild Animal Foundation has started a campaign to protect the endangered species, of which there are fewer than 100 lesser spotted eagle pairs in Germany.

Five areas in Mecklenburg where pairs breed have been set aside as protected areas.
