Swedish feminists elect leadership triumvirate

Swedish political party the Feminist Initiative (Feministiskt initiativ - Fi) has elected two women and a man to succeed the outgoing founder and spokesperson Gudrun Schyman.

The trio were elected on Sunday at the party’s congress in Malmö with Schyman receiving a rousing send off in thanks for her contributions to the party that she helped to start in 2005.

Former Left Party leader Schyman plans to remain on the board, but will focus more on local politics in Simrishamn, where Fi is the third largest party with four seats.

“Schyman will continue to be a part, but in a different way,” said Sissela Nordling Blanco, 23, from Stockholm, one of the new spokespeople.

The other two are Carl Emanuelsson, 29, Värmdö, and Stina Svensson, 41, Stockholm.

Nordling Blanco describes herself as well established within the feminist movement.

“So I feel I have a platform to get our message across.”

She believes that the party will continue to grow despite a weak showing in the general election in 2010.

“There was then a lot of focus on bloc politics. That was a problem for us.”

The congress decided not to approve of a proposal forwarded by Gudrun Schyman to change the name of the party to The Feminists.

“I look at it as if we take the initiative all the time. Feminism is something to do and not something you are, so I’m glad we kept the old name,” Nordling Blanco said.

Fi’s spokespeople are elected for two year terms.
