Swedish police duped by ‘hijacked bus’ stunt

More than 15 squad cars set loose in a high-speed chase in Hälsingland in eastern Sweden on Friday evening after authorities received information that two armed men had hijacked a bus.

After a 40-minute pursuit covering more than 100 kilometres, police learned that an event company staged the hijacking.

The police found the armed men, the passengers and the bus in a cabin outside Edsbyn, about three and a half hours from Stockholm.

Police seized the weapons and had a serious talk with the “perpetrators,” aged 32- and 53-years-old, and members of the company who hired the kick-off event.

“We are forced to take all such information seriously. You become so disappointed in people who do not think others could be injured in these situations,” Gävleborg police officer Margareta Olander told the local Söderhamns Kuriren (SK) newspaper.

A witness driving in his car behind the bus saw the two armed men stop and ‘hijack’ the bus outside Edsbyn.

“The witness in the car behind the bus was terrified. It’s sad how people put others and themselves in danger,” said Olander to SK.

The two men from the event company are now suspected of violating Sweden’s weapons laws.
