‘Sweden has key role in cyberwar’: report

The Americans have been busy quietly identifying important infrastructure across the globe, the documents reviewed by the Dagens Nyheter daily show.

The deputy US Ambassador to Sweden Robert Silverman, was tasked with finding out if there is something that should be added to America’s secret list ove core infrastructure, worthy of protection.

His conclusion was that Sweden should be given a greater priority.

In his confidential response to Washington, he mentions two points to be added to the protection list. One is a pharmaceutical company. The second, and most important for national security, is the entire Swedish telecom network – especially TeliaSonera cables to the east.

“If these lines of communication were destroyed, broken or exploited, it can damage the entire world’s communications, ” he wrote.

The final destination of Silverman’s report is the US Department of Homeland Security, the special ministry that was created by President Bush after the attacks of September 11th 2001 to coordinate U.S. defence against terrorism.

The department compiles conclusions over the defensive measures required in a plan, the National Infrastructure Protection Plan. The diplomatic telegrams that WikiLeaks published shows that the U.S. considers the entire world to be its security zone.
