Swedes send 35 million Christmas cards

Christmas cards by snail mail remain popular among Swedes, with Swedish postal service Posten estimating that it will deliver nearly 35 million Christmas cards this year.

Swedes send 35 million Christmas cards

Despite the temptations of digital technology in keeping Christmas well-wishers from pen and paper, Swedes will send more Christmas cards by post this season than even the volume delivered by Posten in the 1970s.

“With close to 35 million Christmas cards in Sweden, we have once again received confirmation that handwritten greetings are much more personal than digital alternatives,” said Andreas Falkenmark, communications director of Posten Sweden, in a statement.

“At Christmas and other holidays, we prefer the personal and those that come directly through the mailbox,” he added.

Post’s first forecast of the number of Christmas cards sent in Sweden this year by post stands at similar levels compared with 2009.

Although there are many ways to send Christmas greetings in the digital age, Swedes continue to send more Christmas cards now than the levels recorded in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, when Swedes sent over 30 million Christmas cards per year.

A study by Posten shows that it is far more popular to send and receive traditional physical Christmas cards than electronic greetings yet.

A total of 81 percent of Swedes said they prefer to receive their Christmas cards in the mail, while 13 percent prefer to receive digital greetings.
