Drunk student wakes in startled stranger’s home

A first-year university student has been fined and issued a suspended sentence for trespassing, as well as ordered to pay damages after he mistakenly entered the wrong home in southern Sweden following a night of heavy drinking.

The 23-year-old student stumbled into the wrong home after drinking a large volume of alcohol in May at an introductory party for new students, Skånska Dagbladet reported on Thursday.

In the morning, the students at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Alnarp, located between Malmö and Lund, held a “champagne breakfast.”

However, instead of champagne, the young man was served vodka and remembered little of the subsequent events that led to him blacking out in a stranger’s home.

After the party, the man was freezing in the rain as he entered the dwelling in nearby Lomma that he took for his own by breaking a window. He then went into the bedroom and fell asleep on a bed, leaving his shoes in the kitchen.

The less-than-graceful intrusion disturbed the homeowner, however, who awoke to find someone standing in her bedroom.

Being short-sighted, she initially thought that it was her son. After returning from the bathroom, her son informed her that a strange man was in the house and had fallen asleep in his bedroom.

The panicked homeowner was so scared by the intruder, she called the police and stood outside in the rain with her family while waiting for the officers to arrive. The police came to the home within 10 minutes with a five-car patrol.

The young man was in no way intimidating, but the woman was still afraid and terribly angry about finding a strange man in her home and said during the investigation that she did not know if there were other strangers in the house.

She felt that she could not protect her children in the home and decided to take her family out into the pouring rain.

The student was deemed a conscientious person and the district court found no reason to sentence him to prison or probation, issuing a suspended sentence with a fine instead.

The man must also pay damages for and replace the window he smashed when he broke into the house.
