Pharmacy head wins ‘top female executive’ award

Ann Carlsson, who will take over as CEO of state-owned pharmacy chain Apoteket AB in November, has won this year's 'Ruter Dam' award for the most influential female executive in Sweden.

Pharmacy head wins 'top female executive' award

“Ruter Dam’s jury chose Ann Carlson because she is the woman who was promoted to Sweden’s most powerful post during the year. With a long career as an executive with (supermarket chain) ICA, she is perfectly suited for the job,” said Gunilla Arhén, Ruter Dam’s CEO and founder, in a statement.

The Ruter Dam award was introduced at a time when there were few leading female executives, but retains its importance as an award recognising achievement, despite the shift in the gender balance that has occurred in the interim period.

“It feels surprising, great and flattering,” Ann Carlsson said. “I had not even contemplated that I could be in the running for this.”

Carlsson will take over Apoteket AB, which until July 1st 2009 operated a retail pharmacy monopoly in Sweden, in November, taking responsibility for a turnover amounting to 23 billion kronor ($3.5 billion) and 5,500 employees.

“I look forward to starting at Apoteket and feel full of enthusiasm for the task.”

The Ruter Dam award has been awarded by the management development foundation each year since 1990 with candidates chosen from Swedish companies with an annual turnover of more than 3 billion kronor.

Previous winners include Magdalena Gerger, Minoo Akhtarzand, Jeanette Söderberg, Signhild Arnegård Hansen, Ingrid Jonasson Blanck, Mia Brunell Livfors, and Marie Erling.

The Ruter Dam board is made up of Ulla-Britt Fräjdin-Hellqvist, Gunilla Arhén, Gunnel Duveblad, Annika Falkengren and Malin Persson.
