Siemens will supply wind turbines capable of producing 600 megawatts of electricity, enough for 240,000 households, in Ontario. It will also provide 98 turbines for an Oklahoman wind farm, enough for 227 megawatts powering 68,000 homes.
Market prices for land-based wind turbines are around €1 million per megawatt, meaning the orders are worth around €800 million for Siemens, industry specialists said.
“North America is a very important market for wind power,” said Rene Umlauft, head of Siemens’ Renewable Energy division.
Siemens also said it was the first time gearless turbines had been sold in the United States and that the company hoped to capitalise on being the first to offer the new technology in the country.
