Government extends poll lead as election looms

With a general election just six weeks away, Sweden’s four-party Alliance has opened up a 3.3 percentage point lead over the Red-Green opposition in a new Sifo poll.

Government extends poll lead as election looms

The Moderate Party, Centre Party, Liberals and Christian Democrats scored a combined total of 49.3 percent in the August poll, up 0.9 percent on their tally in the last Sifo party preference survey in June.

With a total of 46 percent, the opposition Social Democrats, Left Party and Green Party continue to trail the government despite seeing their share of the projected vote increase by 0.4 points since June.

The far-right Sweden Democrats, pushing to stay above the 4 percent threshold that would give them a place in parliament, dropped 0.2 points to 4.1 percent.

The Moderates remain the largest party, with 32.6 percent of the vote, followed by the Social Democrats on 30.6 percent.

Sifo opinion poll chief Toivo Sjörén said the results showed that the Social Democrats and Mona Sahlin had “not succeeded in making a recovery during the summer”.

“It looks like they’re going to do worse than in 2006, which the Social Democrats considered a catastrophic election. Their current figure represents an unprecedented low and they’re not even the largest party anymore,” he told Stockholm daily Svenska Dagbladet.

The newspaper stressed however that none of the fluctuations in party support recorded since June could be categorized as statistically significant and should therefore be interpreted with caution.

Sifo’s poll results are based on interviews conducted with 1,194 people from August 2nd to 5th.
