Dry weather could hurt blueberry season

It will be a disappointing season for eager blueberry fans if it does not rain soon in Sweden, the newspaper Smålänningen reported on Monday.

Dry weather could hurt blueberry season

Both blueberries and lingonberries have bloomed strongly this year, but the dry weather threatens the blueberries from ripening, the report said.

Although most Swedes are enjoying the current spell of sunny weather, it will be a less-than-fruitful harvest for blueberry pickers without more rain to counter the dry weather, wrote Smålänningen.

The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences will publish its annual forecast on the berry season next week. However, Ola Langvall, the lead researcher in the division of forest field research, has expressed concerned about drought.

He said that the dry spell could lead to fewer ripe berries than usual. The berries will probably be plentiful and sweet, but it will take more time to fill the berry bucket.
