The woman, known in the media as the “Black Widow,” set fire to her apartment while her husband was asleep, killing him. When the fire began, his son was also in the dwelling. She has previously been convicted of manslaughter.
The woman was indicted on suspicion of murdering her husband by setting fire to their home.
The fire enveloped the home quickly, but the son managed to escape while the man remained in the house. Another 42 people were in the building, but none of them were injured.
The woman has denied the crime and claimed that she has no recollections of the evening in question.
She has a previous history of violent crime and was sentenced in 2004 to eight years in prison for manslaughter after strangling a 49-year-old man that she had lived with the previous year.
The woman plans to appeal the life sentence.
“She denies that she committed the crime and one is not satisfied if one is sentenced to life,” said the woman’s lawyer, Thomas Carlstedt.
According to Falun district court, the primary evidence against the woman is her confession to doctor soon after the apartment fire, when she said that she started the arson. She claimed the purpose was to kill her husband and that she had planned it for several weeks.
