Långholmen have had an injury-ravaged start to their season and missing from action on Thursday were two key midfielders in Billy Harkness and Derri Thomas, the latter may not return to action due to a troublesome knee problem and will be sorely missed by his team mates.

The biggest surprise of the evening was the announcement that Edwin Bergquist was being replaced by Chris Allen in goal, absurd as it may sound it actually worked out pretty well for Långholmen and he was undoubtedly his side’s star man on the night.

It was all very hap hazard stuff before the match in trying to get a full team together and former first team goalkeeper James McConnell was called in as a reserve at the very last minute to bolster the Stripes squad.

Vagnhärad did not enjoy Långholmen’s no nonsense approach to the game and had great difficulty in breaching the Stockholm teams back line. Ciaran McCormack and company did a sterling job in protecting Allen’s goal and it took the home team all of twenty minutes before they even came close to bothering the stand in keeper.

Colm Kenny came close on the 23 minute mark but his effort was far too weak to really cause keeper Lindgren any problems.

At times the football was not the prettiest on what was a very poor surface, but Långholmen stuck to their task and never put a foot wrong in a hard fought first 45 minutes.

Mauricio Zalvedar, who played so well at the weekend against Assyriska, had a wild effort on goal just before the interval, his shot almost hitting the corner flag much to the amusement of the away supporters who gave him a fair amount of stick during the match.

Colm Kenny saw his headed effort go agonisingly wide just before the break and referee Navaee blew his whistle to end the half shortly after.

The second half was a much livelier affair and had it not been for the heroics of Allen, Vagnhärad would have claimed all three points. On 54 minutes Anosheh saw his shot from close range knocked away by the goalie, then the rebound bounced off Allen and the third chance was knocked away to safety.

Långholmen fans were in fine voice and you could see that their encouragement really lifted their side as the Stockholm islanders started to created a few chances in front of goal. New boy Baris Kececi had a golden opportunity to win the game for the Stripes but his effort just went wide of the target.

The homeside were pinned back by Långholmen in the closing stages in what they will see as a lacklustre performance. It was the away team that took all the plaudits in a performance that showed both pride and heart and meant that they climbed off the foot of the table.
