Landskrona car park killing trial nears

The 23-year-old man held in connection with the car park assault that led to the death of a 78-year-old woman will remain in custody, a Lund court has ruled indicating that the trial would take place in less than two weeks.

A previous remand hearing on April 20th opened amid chaotic scenes when several people attempted to prevent photographers from taking pictures inside the packed courtroom and so the decision was taken to hold Tuesday’s hearing behind closed doors.

The 23-year-old has been in custody since his arrest on Good Friday on suspicion of aggravated involuntary manslaughter and aggravated assault. At Tuesday’s hearing the man once again denied the offences and is reported to have wept as he was led away.

The new ruling grants the prosecutor, Göran Olsson, until May 12th to file charges. All that remains is the submission of the final report from the medical examiner, which is expected to come before the deadline, according to the local Helsingborgs Dagblad daily.

“We are starting to see the end of the investigation now and the district court has been in touch to book dates starting on the 17th,” said the suspect’s legal counsel Leif Silbersky to the newspaper,

He is suspected of having punched a 78-year-old woman in the face as she intervened on behalf of her 71-year-old husband after a parking dispute outside a Landskrona supermarket on March 29th.

The woman lost consciousness in the affray and died after undergoing an operation at the Skåne University Hospital in Lund on March 31st while her husband escaped the incident with minor injuries.

The 23-year-old man has admitted to involvement in the incident but claims he never intended to injure or kill the victim. Leif Silbersky has claimed that the woman’s death was “purely accidental”.

Bayern Munich footballer under investigation for assault

Bayern Munich and former German national team football star Jerome Boateng, 31, has been charged with assault after allegedly attacking his former partner, German prosecutors confirmed Tuesday.

“The Munich prosecutor's office has had proceedings open against Jerome Boateng for dangerous assault since autumn 2018.

Following extensive investigations, charges were brought on February 11th, 2019,” chief prosecutor Anne Leiding told AFP-subsidiary SID, confirming reports in German media outlets Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ) and WDR.

Leiding added that the court was yet to open the case, but had accepted an accessory prosecution from the alleged victim, named only as 'S.'.

According to the SZ and WDR reports, 'S.' is Boateng's former partner of 10 years and the mother of two of his three children.

Prosecutors also confirmed that Boateng was the subject of a separate police investigation into assault.

Former Germany central defender Boateng is one of the country's most successful players, having won the World Cup with Germany in 2014 and the Champions League with Bayern in 2013.

His career has declined in recent months, after he was dropped from the national squad earlier this year.

Boateng's relationship with his club has also suffered after he slipped down the defensive pecking order at German league champions Bayern.

In May, club president Uli Hoeness advised the 31-year-old to “find a new club”, but a mooted transfer to Italian giants Juventus fell through at the last minute on the final day of the European transfer window on Monday
