Lufthansa’s 4,500 pilots voted on Wednesday to strike for four days next week to press their demands in a simmering labour dispute about job security at Germany’s leading airline.
The company is attempting to rebook passengers and has cobbled together a contingency plan by calling in part-time pilots and flight-qualified members of the management. But roughly 1,200 out of 1,800 daily flights have been cancelled in advance.
The airline has set up a toll-free number for customers on: 0800-8 50 60 70.
Lufthansa’s budget unit Germanwings will also be affected by the strike, however, the airline said on Friday it expected to still carry out around 400 of its scheduled 600 daily flights. Germanwings passengers can seek flight information on: 0800-66 44 935.
Unless Lufthansa is able to avert the strike at the last minute, the labour dispute could cause the worst disruption in service in years and cause the airline to haemorrhage money.
“That’s going to cost us around €25 million a day,” said Lufthansa board member Christoph Franz on Friday.
