“In view of the information revealed so far, I believe it is imperative to clear up thoroughly the circumstances surrounding Mahmud al-Mabhuh’s death,” Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said in a statement.

Andreas Michaelis, head of the German Foreign Ministry’s Middle East desk, held the talks in Berlin with Emmanuel Nahshon, deputy chief of the Israeli mission, at Westerwelle’s behest, the statement said.

Michaelis “asked the Israeli side to examine whether it could provide information that could help clear up the killing … in Dubai and if so, to present this information,” it added.

Diplomatic tensions have mounted over Mabhuh’s killing after Dubai’s police chief revealed that 11 European passport holders – six British, three Irish, one French and one German – were allegedly involved.

No government has directly accused Israel but speculation about the killers has centred on Israel’s Mossad intelligence services, which have used agents with fake passports for such operations in the past.

Dubai police chief Lieutenant General Dahi Khalfan Tamim said he was almost certain Mossad was behind the murder, The National newspaper reported.

“Our investigations reveal that Mossad is involved in the murder of Mabhuh. It is 99 percent, if not 100 percent that Mossad is standing behind the murder,” Khalfan told the Abu Dhabi-based English-language daily.
