Centre Party support hits all time low: poll

A January opinion poll conducted by Expressen/Demoskop reveals the Centre Party captured just 3.1 percent of support, a drop of 2.5 percentage points from the previous month.

It is the lowest recorded figure for the Centre Party from a Demoskop poll and, by failing to meet the four percent threshold required for Parliament, the result is a grave threat for the government.

”If this was the election result the alliance would be out,” said political expert Henrik Oscarsson to Expressen.

Support for the opposition parties grew 0.9 percentage points to 51,2 percent while the alliance received 41.8 percent, a decrease of 2.5 percentage points in the last month.

According to Expressen, experts have pointed the finger towards Centre Party leader Maud Olofsson for the party’s demise.

In her role as Enterprise Minister, Olofsson’s failings in a number of recent industry crises, including Saab and Vattenfall, are to blame for her spiralling support, say commentators.

”She had her time but now her popularity has diminished,” political expert Jenny Madenstam from Stockholm’s University told Expressen. ”To the extent that she is perceived as a bit of a whinger.”

But it’s not all good news for the opposition with the Christian Democrats and Left Party also failing to claim four percent of voter support.

The results also note an increase for the Moderates, Social Democrats and Sweden Democrats.

The survey was conducted between January 4-11 and 1,002 people were interviewed.
