Rowdy prison service Christmas party prompts police response

Police were called to a Christmas party thrown by Swedish prison personnel in Härnösand in northeastern Sweden after the festivities spiraled out of control.

One experienced prison warden was so intoxicated he was kicked out and has since been issued a warning.

In addition, the owner of the bar which agreed to host the party found himself in a chokehold, the Tidningen Ångermanland newspaper reports.

“We received a number of telephone calls and sent out a patrol,” police chief Thomas Nyberg told the newspaper.

The event, which was organized by an athletic club associated with the Swedish Prison and Probation Service (Kriminalvården), is now the subject of an internal investigation by the agency.

The regional head of the prison service, Svante Lundqvist, thinks the entire matter is unfortunate and totally unacceptable.

“In our work as prison wardens we work with people who have substance abuse problems, including with alcohol. It’s obvious that the prison service must set a good example,” he told the newspaper.
