Hundreds of early-morning travellers arrived up to one hour late to work due to the electronic problem. The computer’s software had to be re-installed and did not start working again until around 7:30 am, a Deutsche Bahn spokesperson said.

In the meantime, four long-distance commuter trains were cancelled and dozens of others were delayed. Passengers who were on their way to Hannover’s main train station with regional and S-Bahn commuter trains reported that they were forced to disembark and board buses to complete their trips after significant waits.

High-speed ICE trains and Intercity service was re-routed to Hannover’s Messe/Laatzen station.
