Facebook helps Swedish woman flee knife threat

Facebook status updates sent by a woman held at knifepoint in an apartment in Gothenburg in western Sweden helped lead to her release.

According to a statement from police, several friends of the 23-year-old woman called police shortly after 1am to report that their friend was begging for help via Facebook.

The woman used the popular social networking site to report that she was being held against her will by a 27-year-old male acquaintance who was threatening her with a knife.

“She apparently didn’t have access to a telephone, but was able to use a computer to send out a call for help to her Facebook friends,” police spokesperson Thomas Fuxborg told the Göteborgs-Posten (GP) newspaper.

By the time police responded to the call, the woman had managed to escape from the apartment and was waiting outside with a friend. She told police, however, that the man who had threatened her remained upstairs in the apartment.

Police then arrested the man and confiscated a knife found in the apartment.
