Germans should prepare to bundle up because below freezing temperatures are expected keep their icy grip on the country in the coming days. Particularly in places that have recently seen snow, lows could plunge to below -15 degrees Celsius.
“The cold spell will definitely last until the coming week,” meteorologist Helmut Malewski said from the DWD headquarters in Offenbach.
Only the North and Baltic Sea coastal areas will see highs peak above freezing during the week, he added.
On Tuesday, most of the country will see heavy cloud cover while snow showers are likely to arrive in the far north and areas south of the Danube River. High temperatures will range between minus five and zero, though high altitudes will be even chillier. As night sets in the south and east could also see snowfall as temperatures plummet to -15 in some places.
Wednesday will be mostly dry and partly sunny, but still cold as temperatures top out between -3 and two degrees Celsius.
Snowy conditions will return for Thursday, though, as heavy clouds, frost and temperatures between -7 and -1 degrees everywhere but the northern coast, which will be slightly warmer.
