One woman was seriously hurt after being trapped in her damaged car, but most of those involved in the wreck suffered only light injuries. The authorities said poor visibility due to fog was to blame for the chain reaction.
“Currently there is a large contingent of firemen, police and rescue workers at the scene,” the police said in a statement.
The scope of the accident forced the closure of the autobahn between Schweinfurt-West and Werntal intersection. The police could not say when the stretch of the motorway would reopen.
