The agency’s overspending was not in the area of aid assistance, but rather spending on premises and personnel has increased dramatically this year.
The government has therefore decided to ask the Swedish National Financial Management Authority (Ekonomistyrningsverket) to audit the aid agency, according to the radio programme Ekot, on Sveriges Radio, and news agency TT.
In September this year, Sida discovered that it was at risk of exceeding its 2009 administrative budget of 900 million kronor ($129 million) by 10 percent. Even though Sida then instituted a savings programme, the agency estimates that it will still exceed its budget by six percent this year.
