After a series of price cuts in recent months, the cost of a 250-gramme piece of butter will jump by a third, or €0.20, to €0.85 at Aldi on Thursday, the magazine said. The chain’s move comes in advance of likely higher wholesale prices on the dairy market.
Aldi and other discount supermarkets have been heavily criticised in the past for their rock-bottom prices for dairy products. Farmers have been protesting dire market conditions for months, dumping truckloads of milk over fields and down drains to gain attention for prices they say don’t cover their costs.
According to the National Union of Farmers (DBV), dairy farmers earn between €0.20 and €0.27 per litre of milk, but need twice as much to break even.
Germany’s 90,000 dairy farmers have been fighting for more than a year – staging delivery boycotts, strikes and large demonstrations – to gain recognition for their situation.
Industry leaders plan to meet with Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin for a so-called “milk summit” on Friday in hopes of reaching a solution.
