“The Girl Who Played With Fire” opened in 450 cinemas in Denmark, Norway, Finland and Sweden, where tickets sold briskly despite mixed reviews in leading newspapers.
The film follows Mikael Blomkvist, an investigative reporter played by Swedish actor Michael Nyqvist, and Lisbeth Salander, a feisty rebel hacker-turned-detective portrayed by Swedish star Noomi Rapace.
In Sweden, 90 percent of the 29,000 available seats had been sold for Friday by the country’s leading cinema chain SF Bio, in line with sales for the first installment, SF Bio spokesman Thomas Runfors told AFP.
He said total ticket sales in Sweden — a country of nine million people — were expected to hit 120,000 for the first week.
The film is scheduled to open in Italy on September 25 and October 3 in Spain, production company Yellow Bird said.
The movie adaptation of part one of the trilogy, “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” which came out in Sweden in February, has registered sales of nearly €55 million ($81 million) at the box office worldwide.
A total of some 6.4 million people have seen that movie, according to Yellow Bird.
The Millennium trilogy, which depicts a dark and violent Sweden brimming with state and family secrets, has been translated into more than 30 languages and sold more than 10 million copies worldwide.
Larsson, who worked as a journalist in Stockholm, died in November 2004 of a heart attack, aged 50, a year before the trilogy was published.
